KATHLEEN WAGNER
A storyteller and humorist at heart, I tell a human story in paintings and photographs – Vibrant images that capture humanity with an edge.
Unique perspective, a definitive pose, brilliant colors and high contrast draw me to my subjects, who are often friends and acquaintances. The rich contrast between my growing-up years in Denver and 20 years in Los Angeles and San Francisco, building my career in cable television and raising my two girls, provide endless ideas – so many stories experienced, heard, read and imagined!
My work always begins with a photo –
My camera is always with me. When the photograph says exactly what needs to be said, I leave well enough alone. But sometimes the story demands more and so the image becomes a painting. Acrylics give me the flexibility to add texture and mixed media, including found objects and photographs.
My current series, Ladies Night Out, illustrates the bad girl lurking inside of some otherwise respectable women of a certain age. The story is set in my favorite city, San Francisco: A beautiful multicultural metropolis with a deliciously decadent side. I am happy to share the stories behind my images, but I also invite you into the story, to feel the mood and make up your own tale.
