JUDITH BENNETT
Thinking creatively and “making art” are at the core of who I am. Both influence how I see, interpret my reality and enhance my surroundings. Drawing, painting and collage characterize my work though I am also intrigued with expanding predominantly flat images with three-dimensional painted forms.
I am an intuitive painter and my art often takes on a life of its own as I work through the artistic process. This leads me to feel my way into the heart of a thing in order to determine what is unique and seemingly inexpressible. Nature and the human figure are most often my inspiration. I am drawn to seed pods, flowers, bones, branches and other forms in nature that have a beginning and an end. It is the shapes, complexities and spaces created from their relationship to one another that draw me into their beauty. I am fascinated with the limitless variation, patterns, lines and colors born from these wondrous and intricate forms.
My surfaces are complex – filled with organic and geometric forms combined with line, color and texture to add richness to my compositions. Through many layers of underpainting and glazes to create depth, I often incorporate drawing that evokes a curiosity and pulls in the viewer to take a closer look. For me, the emotional lure of my subject matter is all about the discovery and excitement in finding what is not apparent at first glance.
